"PALIO" - The donkey race

  Palio Web site

The “Palio” or Donkey Race represents from many years the most popular happening during the Town Saint Patron Feast which takes place every year at the middle of September

The origin of “Palio” is after the Second World War when some guys, riding the donkeys of the farms near the country, ran, more for fun than for competition, through the streets of the Town.

Often  their  running never ended because of the fear of the donkeys on seeing  many people along the streets.

From 1987, with the subdivision of the Town in four quarters (named Snake, Panther, Eagle and Horse), the Donkey Race  became a real challenge.

It usually takes place on monday afternoon, after a beautiful historical parade with the Margherita's Band and many local associations.

Donkeys are now "professional" and are ridden by local jokeys dressed with the colour and symbols of their quarters.
The race starts from Dante Square and follows a tracing of streets  in the centre of the town for three times.
